He was born twenty kilometres from the sea, at a stud farm that has been breeding dilute coat colours for thirty years.

Why this matters

This is not Andalusia, which is what almost everyone pictures when they hear Spanish horse. This is the Valencian Community, with its own climate and its own water.

Paco Martí keeps more stallions of the dilute group than any other stud farm in the world. That is not a marketing line, it is the reason a foal like this could be born there at all.

thirteen months

The day I came to look

I led him in hand for twenty minutes, and the whole time he was watching to see what I would do next.

How it went

I looked at several foals. Godo PM was thinner then, and noticeably lighter than he is now, and there was nothing in him yet that read as a future sire.

He was not afraid, and he was not ingratiating either. That combination is rare at thirteen months, and it is what settled the matter.

They showed me the sire and the dam — after that the choice was obvious.

What these clips show

CASIA PM is recorded as chestnut, but she is lighter than any chestnut mare you have seen. It could hardly be otherwise: she got the pearl gene in a single copy, and it still shows.

First ride

A bereiter did the starting by the classical method: in hand, then the rider's weight, then the walk.

How he took it

Godo PM did not resist. Spanish horses rarely resist — they ask again, and if the answer is clear they agree.

I wanted to see how he moves on his own — no lunge line, no me, no task.

What you see without a lunge line

Measurements and indices will not tell you whether a horse goes forward by himself or has to be asked at every stride. That shows only when nobody is holding the line.

He saw the sea for the first time

He touched the water with a front foot for about five minutes, until he decided it was safe. Then he ran.

Why horses are taken to the sea

Firm sand right at the edge is good going for the walk, and salt water cools the legs after work. The sea is not only there for the pictures.

Bay double-pearl

Double pearl on a bay base — that is how the coat colour is written in the studbook. He got the pearl gene in two copies, and for a breeder that settles everything.

Why this is not palomino

Palomino comes from the cream gene. Godo PM carries a different one — the pearl gene. They look alike, they are genetically separate, and they are inherited differently.

Homozygous pearl gives two guarantees, and neither of them depends on which mare you choose.

100%of the foals get the pearl gene. Double pearl is homozygous, there is nothing else to pass on

0grey foals, unless the mare is grey. Grey is dominant, and grey is not what the register gives Godo PM

Four generations

What linebreeding is

The same ancestor on both sides of a pedigree fixes his traits. An entry of 2×3 means: second generation on one line, third on the other.

Godo PM has five such nodes. The main one is LASTUR 2×3: he is the sire of SOL PM II and the sire of ISMAELI, so he stands in the paternal half and in the maternal half alike. His dressage index is 112.51 against a breed average of 100.
